HuntSeat Equitation

What is HuntSeat Equitation?

Huntseat equitation criteria covers the rider's performance and control of the horse, use of riding aids, proper attire, correct form, and factors in rider poise together with the cleanliness and polish of horse, rider and equipment. The performance of the horse is not judged per se. A good equitation rider is always in balance with the horse, maintains a correct position in every gait, movement, or over a fence, and possesses a commanding but relaxed presence, able to direct the horse with nearly invisible aids.

After mastering riding on the flat students work on riding over fences, learning a course of at least six jumps with fence heights that start at 18” and may go up to 3'9" as they master each level. The rider works over fences not only on position and effectiveness of aids, but also the ability to maintain an even, forward pace and meet each fence at an appropriate distance. The goal is to improve skills while at the same time teaching riders about the overall work involved with horse ownership and safe, responsible, caring of their equine partner.
